An Evaluation of Benue State University Students’ Awareness and Application of
Metacognitive Strategies to Reading

The Study investigated students’ knowledge and application of metacognitive strategies as to ascertain the extent to which they read critically. 250 undergraduate students of Benue State University, Makurdi were involved in the study. For the purpose of data collection, a 40—item,standardized questionnaire was used. The data collected were analysed using frequency,percentage, and chi—square. The findings revealed that the respondents have low knowledge of metacognitive strategies and that their application of these strategies was minimal and non-directional. Recommendations were made in terms of the need to develop metacognitive strategies awareness and application ability in the learners.
