Approaches To The Teaching Of Literacy.
Literacy as a discipline focuses on three genres viz.: reading, writing and numeracy or arithmetic; and which of these areas has since developed enormously on its own. There is an avalanche of literature in these genres (their acquisition and teaching), that this paper cannot adequately handle the topic to the depth it would have wished. However, the paper focuses on the skills involved and the various approaches of teaching literacy. As a theoretical framework, an integrated approach for the teaching of literacy programmes has been suggested; its basic assumptions clearly enunciated and its feasibility adequately illustrated. The paper also looks at the relevance, sequence and integration of the prevailing contextual phenomena into the literacy programme. The paper concludes with a brief look at the social functions of literacy.
