DEALING WITH THE SECOND LANGUAGE PROBLEM INFUNCTIONAL LITERACY TEACHING IN A MULTI-LINGUAL ENVIRONMENT

One at the problems often encountered by adult literacy instructions in multilingual environments is the use of second language in instructional communication This is particularly so where the instructor is a non indigene of the area, or an indigene who is not fluent in the use of the local language or dialect. T0 tackle this problem, this paper presents the use of the most common language generally spoken or understood by the people as a mode of instruction. as well as the training and use of indigenous instructor (s) to ensure effective second language literacy instruction in a multilingual environment. The paper further addresses the use of small group discussions as a method of instruction to enhance participatory learning by all.
