INTRODUCTION
Literacy is the ability to read and Write. It usually involves the ability to read a short simple passage with understanding and to provide written answers to questions about it. This definition appears to be rather too simplistic for our use. Therefore let us look at the definitions of ‘reading’ and ‘writing’ – the key elements in the discussion of literacy. According to Bond et al. (19795), Reading is the recognition of printed or written symbols which serve as stimuli to the recall of meanings built up through the reader‘s past experiences The reading process involves both the writer’s and the reader’s own contributions and reflection of these meanings.
