ENGLISH: A MAJOR IMPEDIMENT IN THE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MOTHER TONGUE EDUCATION POLICY IN NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT
English was and still remains the only uniting factor in this country Although other languages exist. none of them has been as acceptable as English. It may be the white man’s language, but in the long run. it has brought more blessing than curses to us. It is the language of administration, education. commerce and industry, inter ethnic communication and the key to deceit! employment. Hence for some years. one of’ the main issues in primary. language teaching has been the conflict between the place of Nigerian languages and English as the medium of instruction. The question has always been whether or not it is desirable or even possible to break away from the existing practice (replacing English with Nigerian languages) and if ‘so. at what cost. This paper sets out to discuss the role (if/English in the Nigerian education system as a major impediment in the effective implementation of the
mother tongue education policy in Nigeria. The paper contends that getting a Nigerian language to replace English as a medium of instruction will be a 21‘” century miracle.
