ENGLISH LANGUAGE LITERACY INSTRUCTION IN NIGERIA AS A MULTl-LINGUAL SOCIETY

This paper. which appears in six headings. examines issues on English Language instruction in Nigeria as a multi—lingual environment It draws inspiration from some socio – linguistic hypotheses and other theories with their underpinnings in language study to highlight the relevance of English Language instruction in the complex Nigerian linguistic mother. It begins with a brief introduction, which spotlights the methodological design and defines certain usages in the text for the purpose or proper contextualization. It then goes on to explain basic concepts in the theme and gives some historical account of English Language teaching in Nigeria, The paper identifies the challenges of English Language instruction for literacy and attempts to discuss these. it offers strategic options. which could he used to remedy the challenges and concludes on an optimistic note by postulating that English Language instruction for Literacy has great potentials and that the benefits could he optimised’ through literacy programmes which allow English Language instruction and the vernacular languages to complement themselves.
