The paper shows that the efficiency of the basal approach that has continued to he in widespread use in the primary school in Nigeria can he enhanced, by maintaining its strengths. and by making it amendable for use with any or a combination of the integrated. analytic or deductive and inductive reading approaches. This would satisfy conservative education authorities who believe that radical changes in teaching methods would cause undue upheaval in the educational system; and who believe that the basal approach enables them to control and monitor standard of reading instruction easily It would also saris/fit advocates of change who believe that the many insights gamed from research into reading instruction should he incorporated into reacting programme in the primary school.
