FIRST LANGUAGE LITERACY DEVELOPMENT AND THE LIBRARY: A LIBRARIAN’S VIEW

This article discusses education in general, education in Nigeria, the effect off literacy in the development of a country, it shows that there is a high degree of correlation between mass illiteracy and under-development. The article then discusses functions of mother tongue in traditional society and in the education of children that are just starting their primary school education as well as the uses of mother tongue in adult literacy programs. Then, the role of the library in first language literacy development is highlighted Finally, some strategies that could be adopted by libraries in enhancing the first language literacy development are discussed.
