IGBO LANGUAGE LITERACY AND DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIAN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS: ISSUES AND PROSPECTS

Language is human and every human activity revolves around it. Any flaw or setback in language hinders development and literacy. This development is and should be related to the people’s needs since language cannot exist or function in isolation from the speakers. Therefore, any impediment to literacy development should be given due consideration. Many factors militate against Igbo language literacy and development. The problems identified
among others range from the government’s non-implementation of language policies, negative attitude by the native speakers, low proficiency of teachers due to inadequate human and material resources to lack of incentives to language teachers. Directional and realistic recommendations towards an authentic Igbo language literacy and development were succinctly proffered.
