It is a known fact that literacy level and reading competence of secondary school students in our public schools are anything but encouraging This study therefore attempted to sensitize a sample of students to some desirable reading
techniques, which if practiced and imbibed could improve their reading competence and literacy level. Informal observation technique was used to study the students reading activities and problems while questionnaire items helped to confirm observed problems. Also, boo/(centred practice method directed at improving their reading comprehension and reading speed formed the core of instruction. Finding revealed that the students improved significantly in their speed but not significantly in their comprehension rate. It was therefore recommended that reading skills should be formally taught to the students instead of leaving them to learn how to read by chance through loud reading of the class texts.
