INFLUENCE OF PRE-READING STRATEGY INSTRUCTION ON ACHIEVEMENT IN READING COMPREHENSION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT
The Study was carried out to find out to find out the relative effectiveness of Pre-Reading Strategy Instruction on reading achievement of Senior Secondary School students. it also investigated the relationships between attitude to reading and achievement in Reading Comprehension.

Ninety-six Senior Secondary School students from two secondary schools (co-educational) in Ogun, State Nigeria, constituted the subjects. A reading habit inventory, an attitude scale and a multiple-choice objective type achievement tests for pre an pre-tests between which were treatment sessions were used. the experimental subjects exposed to a pre-reading strategy skill instruction were compared without the control group. A T-test of independent groups was  computed to  compare the gain in pre and post-tests. the finding show that the experimental students whose were taught pre-reading strategy skills performed better than those who were not taught (control).

The results also show that the experimental students who were taught a pre-reading strategy had a positive attitude to Reading comprehension compared tot the control group. the study has implication for language teachers and school administrators. When the learners are taught how to use pre-reading skills and prior knowledge before the actual reading of a passage or material, they are likely to understand it better and this will also influence their attitude positively.
