Linguistics and Reading

Various levels of activity go under the heading of reading, but three broad kinds can be recognized, particularly in the context of this conference. There is the initial stage of reading when in the normal situation, the child first learns to read his mother-tongue, when he takes the first steps in literacy. This is what the word ‘Reading’ would stand for on the time-table of the first year of a primary school. Then there is the daily activity of decoding written messages. Modern life would be impossible without this kind of activity, which is obviously different from the activity which the child learning to read is engaged in. Finally, there is study-reading; including the reading of literature, which again is different from the two kinds of reading earlier described, but more different from the first than from the second.
