This paper attempts to explore Literacy and Language Policy in Nigeria from a diachronic perspective. In doing this, it argues that language policies are crucial in the development of languages. and indeed. the promotion of literacy. The paper points out that the Nigerian Language policy is built on the Fernandonian approach, which attempts to give dominance to the language(s) of the majority ethnic group(s). The paper gives attention to the weaknesses
and strengths of the policy. It notes that there are problems which have militated against the full realization of the objectives of the policy. Furthermore, the paper looks at the journey of literacy and the Nigerian language policy so far. which makes literacy and language policy serve the linguistic and developmental needs of Nigeria as an independent sovereign State.
