LITERACY EDUCATION FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: BEYOND TALK

Introduction
Since I982 the Reading Association of Nigeria has been in active pursuit of its mission of advancing education in literacy at all levels of education. It has since grown to are respectable organization with significant influence on policy and practice in literacy education. Yet, there are many hurdles to cross. There are significant shortcomings in policy and pedagogy concerning literacy which must be addressed vigorously if literacy education is to make a full contribution to educational advances and national development. This informs the topic of this lecture. ‘Literacy Education for Good Governance and National Development: Beyond Talk’. This has been deliberately coined out of the global theme of this conference ‘Literacy for Good Governance’. The logic is that good governance has a direct link with national development and quality education is a function of a people’s literacy practices and literacy education.
