Literacy for the Development of Disadvantaged People: A Case for Citizenship Education in Nigeria

Recent improvement in technology has greatly enhanced communication. New frontiers open on a daily basis, which truly make the world a global village. The most diverse cultural practices are brought into our sitting rooms. while the most bizarre human activities are no longer hidden from any group of persons irrespective of age, class or creed. in this seemingly chaotic dissemination of information, literacy is the essential tool with which individuals and
groups all over the world advertise not only their capabilities and industrial output but also their cultural heritage. It is, indeed the headwaters for self-edification, socio-economic emancipation of disadvantaged people and national development. The underdeveloped nations of the world that have not laid emphasis on mass literacy as a way of breaking the shackles of under development are further disadvantaged. This paper explores the citizenship
education option as a means of achieving one hundred percent literacy and sustaining development in Nigeria. It articulates the methodology, socio-cultural and educational linkages that should be exploited to transform such “fossilized” institutions as the National Youth Service Corps into an army of literacy campaigners to sustain development in Nigeria.
