Literacy Skills Development and Entrepreneurial Skills Development of Traders in Owerri, Nigeria

Abstract
Literacy liberates one from the shackles of ignorance, poverty and economic depression. It is a catalyst for change, transformation and socio economic development. Literacy enhances business enterprise and development. This study examines the diverse ways in which literacy improves the individual and enhances private business enterprises. It particularly focuses on some traders from Ekeonwunwa Market, Owerri who through continuing education and further studies have been able to improve themselves and their businesses. Thus they have become greatly emancipated through literacy. Oral interviews served as the instrument for the study. A purposive sampling method was used to select seven graduates and undergraduates who started their private businesses as School Certificate holders Results show that these traders are able to excel much better in their business enterprises because of their acquisition of literacy skills. The literacy skills acquired at later stages have helped them harness their talents and resources for greater business enterprise.
