LITERATURE IN NIGERIAN MOTHER TONGUES: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF LITERACY ACQUISITION

This paper takes the position that literature is indispensable to the acquisition of literacy. We write what we read and we read what we write. it is a simple axiom that sums up the basic ingredients of literacy. Nigerian mother tongues with their robust and rich literature ca catalyse literacy acquisition through their oral and written forms. This paper examines the problems that are inherent in using literatures in the Nigerian mother tongues as a vehicle for literacy empowerment. it also examines the prospect of using literature in the Nigerian mother tongue for the same purpose. The paper ends by suggesting some practical steps that can be used in using literature in Nigerian mother tongue as a veritable tool for literacy empowerment.
