Making Reading Pleasurable for Youths: The Need for Reading Centres

Reading for academic purposes differs from reading for pleasure in our motivation and in what we get out of the reading, yet both complement each other. Whoever enjoys reading for pleasure eventually develops positive love for any kind of reading. The thrust oft/its paper is to mirror the benefits of reading/literacy centres as outlets that would create pleasures in Nigerian youths. In trying to do this, issues on the importance of reading, the concept of reading centres, the why and need of reading centres and goals of reading centres as Well as the challenges of literacy development in Nigeria are discussed. Based on the foregoing the writers contend that establishment of reading centres for youths would rekindle the passion for reading in our youths and enable them to eschew certain negative attitude towards reading as a boring exercise good enough solely for examination purpose.
