Introduction
Wilson L. Taylor (1953) coined the word “Cloze” from the Gestalt School of
Psychology and applied it as a testing device for determining the reading ability of native speakers of English. The technique has, however, been applied with variations and adaptations of the measurement of achievement in second language (L2) learners’ reading comprehension and language proficiency (see Chihara, et al., 1977; Hinofotis, 1980; Ojerinde, 1980; Okonkwo, 1988; Aboderin, 1988).
