In 1976, the Imo State government embarked on a Major curriculum Innovation. The Imo State Ministry of Education commissioned the writing and publlcation of some textbooks for the state’s school system, this was known as the Imo Textbook Develapment Project”. Two writng panels were set up namely: “The English panel” and “The Mathematics panel”. They were charged with the task of writing primary course books in English and mathematics respectively, based on the Nigerian environnent and suited to the needs of the child in Imo State.
This paper discusses the ten years of this experiment with regard to the
English panel, It examines the successes and failures of the proJect and makes recommendations for the improvement of the Imo Textbook Development project, It suggests some guidellnes for state governments embarking on textbook production in general.
