Ondo State is a State where there are clusters of other languages apart from Yoruba which is erroneously regarded by some people as the only language spoken in the state. Ondo State Television and Radio Stations carry ‘Egberi’ which means ‘News’ in Izon (Ijo) Language. This is to say that the State recognized Izon language and Yoruba language. Linguists have recognized other languages, which are mistakenly regarded by native speakers of such languages as dialects of Yoruba. In the opinion of linguists, the native speakers of these language are bilinguals. They speak their indigenous languages and Yoruba language. Yoruba language which is not their language is taught as mother tongue in schools. This paper will enumerate the problems and prospects of using mother tongue in 0ndo State School in view of the fact that Izon, Akpees, Uro—Ahan and Ukaan languages are not recognized in the Primary School Curriculum or in Junior Secondary School Curriculum.
