The paper discusses ways of promoting peaceful co-existence and religious tolerance through reading in Basic Education. The paper also highlights ways the tenets of peaceful co—existence and religious tolerance can be included in titles of supplementary reading materials and reading comprehension passages of the reading component of the English Language Curriculum for Basic Education. The more children are exposed to reading materials that promote positive images of other peoples culture, religion, uniqueness, social identity etc, the less they are likely to find faults with one another and the more they are able to live and work together (as future adults) for the benefits of mankind and for the good of the society. The paper suggests that schools should adopt a holistic and integral approach in promoting peaceful co-existence and religious tolerance by encouraging students to engage in meaningful activities such as dramatization, miming, singing, poetry, projects and exchanges to heighten local, national and global awareness of individual, cultural and religious differences.
