Promoting the Reading Habit in Nigeria

“The African reads first and foremost to learn and improve himself … and as a result of his arduous reading … does not … develop a taste for recreative reading”. (Unesco Seminar on Public Libraries in Africa, 1963). “The majority of present day Nigerians have been brought up in illiterate homes where reading for pleasure is not known. Even the literate ones have not yet cultivated the reading habit nor are they fully conscious of the usefulness of reading …” (Oku, 1970).
