For some time now, success at the West African School Certificate English Language Examination has continued to elude majority of the candidates who take the examination anually. An investigation conducted into the candidates’ performance revealed that one of the major causes of the annual mass failure is inefficient reading on the part of the candidates. This paper reports the investigation and goes further ahead to suggest some of the steps that could be taken to remedy the ugly situation since inception of the 6-3-3-4 system of education.
