Reading in the Literary Arts: the Role of Literature in National Development

This paper is not intended as an apology for literature. Rather, it is a brief attempt to situate the concept of reading within the general framework of our national development, and to specify its relevance in the educational system. What, indeed, is reading and why do people read? Reading involves the physical act of applying oneself to studying in order to learn and understand the true nature, meaning and significance of some form of knowledge.
