Reading Readiness for Higher Education in the Medium of English as a Second Language
Higher education in the medium of English as a second language in Nigeria imposes certain demands on the language skills of the learner, to which Reading is central. This paper examines critically the state of the reading readiness secondary school-leavers bring into the entry point for higher education, particularly for the university. In the process, certain inadequacies are identified in the reading preparation of secondary school students, which may tend to inhibit their learning efficiency when they go on to university. Out of the critique emerge some suggestions for preparing secondary school students for the reading tasks encountered in the learning activities at the level of higher education.
