The paper discusses reading skill-based approach to teaching literary concepts in areas such as plot, setting and characterization. The heuristic values of teaching literature as specific reading skills were therefore presented. The paper finally highlighted the reading skills expected to be developed and mastered by the students inselected genres of literature such as poetry, drama, essay, novels and short stories. It was concluded that reading skilled-based approach to teaching literature though presently not popular among lierature teachers had more intructional qualities that recommend the approach.
