SECOND LANGUAGE LITERACY INSTRUCTION IN A MULTILINGUAL ENVIRONMENT

Over the years, scholars have given insights into the teaching and learning of the second language in multilingual environments. Second language teaching and learning in a multilingual environment has special features which make for effective language learning and use [Afolayam 1995]. Bearing in mind the multiplicity of languages in the multilingual environment of Nigeria, and the specific demands for relevant second language literacy. development and adequate utilization, appropriate understanding of features and methodology of second language instruction are essential. In language instruction, the teacher, the degree of his competence, the teaching method the appropriateness of teaching and learning materials, their psychological and linguistic bases; the student; his language learning ability and the social environment in which study takes place are paramount. This paper discusses the second language literacy issue, multilingualism, meaningful literacy instruction, the problems of the second language learner, and makes recommendations/or curriculum design/or second language literacy instruction.
