Reading is the bedrock of literacy and it creates a sound mind. Learning to read requires a developmental reading program which builds on the very foundation of the emergent reader. It nurtures it to the level of strategic reading which can be regarded as the hallmark of reading.However. it can be very difficult to achieve when language. listening and writing skills are not present. These skills help in a variety of ways including the achievement of eye hand coordination,letter sound connection, and visual discrimination among others. This implies that a number of methods will be involved the teacher, from his wealth of knowledge, should select the appropriate method for his language teaching. This should be done considering the learners, environmental factors, cost, time etc. This paper analyses the practical approaches to teaching reading to beginners.It highlights some strategies for achieving peace through acquiring good reading culture. The paper concludes that it takes a good background at the emergent reading stage to in still a good reading culture in students which is essential for achieving peace and ensuring sustainable development
