TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TO ILLITERATE AND SEMI—ILLITERATE YOUTHS IN PORT HARCOI’RT MUNICIPALITY

This paper ix centrally pre-occupied with the need to teach English as an L2 for the literacy education of illiterates and semi-illiterates in Port Harcourt. Questions examined in this paper were based on the need for free literacy education of all illiterates in Port Harcourt municipality. The aim behind the suggestion of free literacy education for all in Port Harcourt was to combat, curb and eventually eliminate anti-social and criminal habits of most jobless youngsters and adults in Port Harcourt. Many interesting discoveries were made in this paper. The paper also presented recommendations for the provision of free literacy education for all illiterates in Port Harcourt. As a step for further research in this area of study. other cities and states in Nigeria could also adopt some of the recommendations in this paper for the evaluation of a free literacy education for all illiterates.
