This paper is predicated on the influence of the radio. the television and the telephone upon the attainment of mass literacy and the development of leisurely reading culture in Rivers State. New technologies such as the Global Satellite Mobile (GSM) usually affect antecedent conditions. The paper reveals that the three items of information technology influence literacy and reading for pleasure severally. Such influence includes attainment of language efficiency via the use of GSM facilities to read and send text messages: listening to and reading television programmes; using the radio in distant learning programmes et cetera. Conversely. newer
electronic communication and entertainment technologies have hampered interest in leisurely reading. Currently. more and more people are being attracted to foreign and local home video programmes rather than reading the novels. plays. short stories and the papers, Besides. there is the exigency factor in the use of language in the electronic media. Language is conditioned by time. appropriacy. profit and precision. which in some conditions militate against proper language learning Besides. the leisurely reading interest of the individual is not taken into consideration in such programmes. This paper therefore opines that programmes built into these
new technologies should create opportunities for both effective acquisition of literacy and the promotion of the culture of reading for pleasure.
