THE POWER AND POLITICS OF LITERACY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA.
DR. A OLAOFE
The issues related to power and politics of literacy education are presented in this paper based on a multidimensional sociolinguistic approach developed largely by Kachru (1986). At a global level, the socioeconomic and political problems facing Nigeria these days call for a deeper and critical examination of our literacy programmes in order to answer the following salient thought provoking questions:
1. Can our literacy educational efforts be said to be yielding positive results?
2. Is our literacy education capable of setting up a stable socio-political system and rapid economic progress?
3. What kind of power is the politics of Nigerian literacy education wielding?
4. How can literacy education be made more development-oriented in Nigeria?
