The Reading Lesson: An Emancipating or A Domesticating Experience?
Jane J. Olatunji Hudges and Kayode Sanni

Abstract
The NPE is designed to build a just and egalitarian society where there is respect for the worth and dignity of individuals. Yet success in the educational hierarchy at both primary and secondary levels is dependent on passing examinations in English . In these examinations, only a metropolitan model of English is acceptable. Moreover, the primary timetable and teacher training syllabus are still based on Colonna models which leave little room for innovation. It is submitted that these factors domesticate rather than liberate the Nigerian child.
