Language is the main vehicle ofa people ’5 culture as it offers them full membership in their community. Literacy in one ’s language not only preserves but also facilitates dynamic development of the language. Ibibio is one of the Nigerian languages spoken in about 13 out of 31 Local Government Areas in the State. In spite of the official recognition accorded the Ibibio language and the efforts of the Ibibio Language Writers Association (ILWA) to
propagate the language, literacy level still remains low such that our school leavers pass out of primary and secondary schools without the ability to read and write in their language. This paper therefore examines the possible constraints to literacy acquisition in Ibibio at the primary school level and suggests alternative approach to the development of literacy in the language.
