Readability according to Dale and Chall (1948) is
… the sum total (including interactions) of all those elements within a given piece of printed material that affect the success_which a group of readers have with it. The success is the extent to which they understand it, read it at optimum speed, and find it interesting.
English and English (1958) supporting the above idea hady this to say on readability: The quality of a written or printed communication that makes it easy for a given class of persons to understand its meanings or that induces them to continue reading.
