The Teaching of Braille in Nigeria
K. C. Sykes 8 P. M. Ajuwon
The importance of parents and teachers providing opportunities for learning and conceptual development underlies the braille readiness programme. Difficulties imposed by the braille code and the mechanics of braille are outlined along With the importance of seeing braille as a tool and as an integral part of the school curriculum. Braille teaching programmes are briefly discussed as well as factors in Nigeria that might exacerbate the difficulties of teaching braille. An individualised approach is seen to offer a solution to these difficulties. The need for early intervention and the provision of services to assist the families of visually handicapped children are stressed, and ways that teachers might gain assistance are suggested.
