Breaking The Chains Of Illiteracy Among Nigerian Rural Adults: Problems And Prospects

Abstract
Illiteracy is viewed as a world-wide problem that deprives many adults in the society of the chances to compete for jobs when writing or reading skills are needed. Such adults remain unemployed, their talent untapped and their abilities undeveloped illiterate children usually grew into illiterate adults. Some hindrances and prospects to adult literacy are highlighted. Some pedagogical implications for the adult education teacher include suggested guidelines for teaching adults to read and write and for the adult education students, there are same suggested, practical steps that would help them to acutely break the chains of illiteracy. Finally, the paper has made vital suggestions to aid the Adults Literacy Programme to achieve its objectives.
