Cultural Constraints on Comprehension among Second Language Users

Comprehension processing among second language users is described. A cultural component that affects student performance is identified and its form and function examined. Preliminary results of comprehension tests, administered to second language users at University level, are analysed for their contribution towards the formation of a definitive theory of text processing. Emphasizing the teacher’s role in building comprehension skills in second language users, the paper- offers strategies for using cultural factors to increase the comprehension power of readers.
