Comprehension Tasks Involved in Reading Instructions

Secondary school students lack many of the reading skills they require for preparing their lessons. In the developed
countries this problem was identified after World War II and as a result developmental reading programmes were introduced into secondary schools. In Nigeria, like in many other developing countries, however, the awareness of this deficiency has been more recent (Unoh 1976), and up till now there is a dearth of similar programmes in our schools. Inadequate mastery of these skills is a factor contributing to the frustration of teachers, who complain
incessantly about students’ poor standards, and to the agony of the students themselves, who try to cover up their deficiency by cheating at exams. They no longer have confidence in their ability to understand, apply, and reproduce what they have studied.
