Interest in promoting literacy in the mother—tongue as the first language has received considerable attention in recent times. This has not been easy because foreign language as the second language has gained pride off place in the society. This paper examines how Nigerian libraries can participate effectively in the developing of first language literacy. It identifies strategies for promoting the first language literacy. It concludes by making recommendations
that could encourage the use of their mother —longue in learning to read and write, among which is the promotion of the development of orthography and embarking on publications in the mother—tongue.
