ENHANCING LITERACY THROUGH THE GLOBAL SYSTEM FOR MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATION

The study investigated the correlation between the acquisition of literacy skills and use of Global system for mobile telecommunication (GSM) at Awi town in Akamkpa Local Government Area. Cross River State Nigeria. The subscribers to the mobile networks (MTN,GLO AIR TEL. ETISALA T etc) in Akamkpa constituted the population. The design of the study was a survey based on simple random sampling technique. 350 cell phone users constituted
the sample Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated A questionnaire named Literacy Enhancement through GSM (LENGSM) was administered to the respondents.Data were analyzed through the application of mean, standard deviation and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The mill hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level significance.Results showed that GSM aids acquisition of literacy, and that the more the individual becomes literate. the more he/she shows interest in the use of GSM. and concomitantly the more competent he/she becomes in the operation of more complex and advanced GSW applications. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study on the need for stakeholders to enhance literacy acquisition through the use of cell phones.
