This paper examined how scientific literacy could be enhanced through increased science vocabulary. The paper discusses how vocabulary knowledge is strongly related to reading comprehension. The definition of scientific literacy is also given and sources of scientific literature around us identified. The paper also looked at the scientific activities in Nigeria. It
points out that with the upsurge of scientific activities there should not exist a non-chalant attitude towards reading efforts. It has also highlighted factors that could help to promote scientific” literary through increased reading of scientific articles in magazines. newspapers and other sources.
In addition it has also discussed the role of the science teacher in helping students in their reading comprehension efforts. Teaching strategies which can help science vocabulary development were also identified. It highlighted the role of English Language teachers in laying a firm foundation in the language of instruction which will go along way towards improving vocabulary acquisition by students.
