Adult literacy is fundamental to economic, professional and competitive performance of modern nations. It is also crucial to individuals, as literacy skills can make a difference in their prosperity level. Over the years, different researches on functional literacy have established a link between economic/job security and literacy practices. Opportunities to cultivate literacy skills are shaped by many factors, including labour market participation, the types of job people hold, and access to training and education. Because access to such opportunities varies widely, some adults, particularly automobile drivers are less than others to build on their literacy skills. It is against this background that this research was embarked upon to establish the rationale for functional literacy programme for university drivers, and how best to organize such.
