Literacy, Nigerian Press and the People

The paper examines the role of the citizens in ensuring that government officials are held accountable for their actions, One of the roles is by utilizing the press in communicating their views/opinions to their elected representatives. But due to the low literacy level of the citizens in the English language and the native languages, Nigerian people find it difficult to communicate their wishes to government officials. They also find it difficult to scrutinize government policies and programmes or what the press reports on their behalf. This paper argues that he Nigeria policy on language is the major cause of the low literacy level. It there/ore calls/bi” a review of the policy as a way of helping Nigerians to acquire literacy skills in the languages domiciled in their environment.
