Mathemagenic Behaviour in the Nigerian Reading Comprehension Class.

This study investigated the systematic instructional activities adopted by Nigerian teachers to facilitate learners‘ comprehension of texts. Such teacher-initiated and learning-oriented strategies are technically tagged “Mathemagenic behaviour ” Using data collected from 565 secondary school teachers of English from 16 states
in Nigeria, it was found that the teachers Were generally inclined towards testing rather than providing professional assistance towards learners’ comprehension. In most cases, the little assistance given tend to stifle rather than stimulate learners’ drive and effort towards meaningful text interpretation, On the basis of the findings, relevant suggestions are proffered towards effective teaching of reading comprehension.
