NETWORKING IN PROMOTING READING: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS
JOANNE J. UMOLU
SPECIAL EDUCA TION AND READING CLINIC, JOS
We are appalled at the low literacy rate of Nigerian adults today (about 44% according to a 1998 UNDP Report). We are deeply concerned about the massive reading failure among pupils and students in the schools. (See Omojuwa, 1985; Oyetunde and Umolu, 1991). We recognize the urgent need to prevent further reading failure and to promote a reading culture. And I believe, we feel personally compelled to devote our time, resources and talents in order to meet these urgent needs.
