Patterning Functional Reading: A Look at the Keyword Technique.

Introduction
This paper reveals how the keyword technique can enhance functional reading in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. Keyword techniques are graphic representations of main ideas, information of facts from what has been read. The keyword technique aims at visually displaying the structure of a text chapter passage or any other reading
material used by the student. It can be designed in such a way that various aspects are revealed: chronological sequence, levels of generality, main points/minor points, examples of cause and effect, classification and relationship of ideas. The writer believes that the keyword technique will go a long way towards reducing the work load of students since it could take all reading purposes in its stride and still remain brief and interesting. The keyword technique has its psychological basis in interest and motivation. By virtue of its involving nature, it requires a lot of active participation by the students.
