The paper discusses a survey conducted to identify patterns of reading the print medium of the mass media by students of Secondary Schools in Jos Metropolis. 400 students were involved in the survey which took place during the long vacation period of the year 2000. in two Extramural centres.
It was found that most students read one form of magazine or sensational headlines of new items in newspapers. In addition, the form of reading adapted by the students in relation to the printed medium of the mass media was largely that of skimming and scanning to glean for news and information. However, what most of them regarded as news items worth considering were romantic stories. sports or violence. Suggestions for integrating this medium into English Language reading lessons are highlighted in the paper.
