Abstract
This write up is to report a survey conducted among primary school pupils and their teachers on why there is very low literacy level among the young learners. The survey was carried out in selected public Primary schools in Kaduna and Zaria towns. For effective data elicitation. questionnaire and structured interviews were employed. The findings revealed that a great percentage of Primary school children are neither learning to read nor reading to learn. More than three -quarters of the children do not do well in
school academic activities and therefore they hardly benefit from the Primary Education. A number of suggestions which border on methodology and materials/texts were made to improve the literacy level of such children and prospective learners.
