Problems of Teaching Reading
The complexity of the language situation in Nigeria is proverbial and this naturally affects the teaching
of reading which is a major component of language function in any modern society. Compounded with that are the problems of inadequate environmental, human and material resources as well as the unsuitable attitUdinal
orientation which plague the educational system in the country. The result is that attainment in reading
is disappointingly low at every educational level.
